As mentioned in the most recent episode of the podcast, I’ve been trying out the new Substack Notes feature.
According to Substack, Notes is a new space on Substack for us to share links, short posts, quotes, photos, and more. My first impressions are overall positive. I wanted to wait a little while to see how it worked, what the user experience was like, and to hear from other writers about what they think.
When it was announced Notes seemed like a simple Twitter clone, and to an extent I would say that still holds to an extent. You can @ mention people but hashtags aren’t a thing — though I assume that’s coming at some point. You have your Home feed which is algorithmically driven but you also have a Subscribed feed which limits what you see to the writers you’re subscribed to. The feature I really like about it is like something they have over on Medium. If you highlight some text in an article it gives you the option to Restack Quote it. This is actually a really nice feature when you want to comment on a particular point.

There is also, apparently a section labeled Bestsellers that is available only to writers with over 100 paid subscribers. I’m not in that boat so I have no screenshots, but what I’ve read is that the point of it is to be a feed just for larger publications to be able to share and lift up smaller writers. Will that actually happen, or will it just be an echo chamber for big time journalists like how Twitter was? I guess time will tell.
Overall it’s an interesting thing. I’m not planning to dive in because I’m not a big social media guy. However, it is kind of nice to have a singular place where I can share some of the random things I don’t necessarily want to write a full article about and that don’t really belong in the podcast (see the Note at the top). So, for now, I’ll be using it fairly regularly to try and grow this site and to have some fun. So as Darth Vader said…
How to join
Head to substack.com/notes or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app. As a subscriber to The Retro Millennial, you’ll automatically see my notes. Feel free to like, reply, or share them around.
You can also share notes of your own. I hope this becomes a space where all of us can share thoughts, ideas, and interesting quotes from the things we're reading and learning about.
If you encounter any issues, you can always refer to the Notes FAQ for assistance. Looking forward to seeing you there!
