I’m excited to announce that The Retro Millennial has reached a major milestone. As of this writing, the current subscriber count is at 1,009 and while I typically try not to focus too much on the numbers, I was really excited about this one and saw it as a big deal. When I was first starting out with this site, I really did not think anyone would be interested in what I was wanting to write about, so seeing this level of support has meant a lot to me personally.
So, as a result of reaching this milestone, I wanted to give back to everyone in some way, and here’s what I came up with:
Promotion of paid subs to Founding Members (details below)
80% off annual subscriptions (details below)
50% off monthly subscriptions (details below)
Introducing RM Quarterly (details below)
Congratulations to Mason – You’re the 1,000th Subscriber!
First and foremost, in honor of the old-fashioned giveaways for the whatever-arbitrary-number-you-like customer we used to see back in the old days, I want to take a moment to congratulate subscriber Mason. You are the 1,000th subscriber to The Retro Millennial! As such, I will be gifting you a free 1-year subscription, which will give you access to paid-only articles, videos, podcasts, and more! I will reach out to you via email shortly to get you the details.
All Pre-1,000 Paid Subscribers are now Founders
As a reward to everyone who has financially supported my work to this point I wanted to do something to show my appreciation. Therefore, anyone with an active paid subscription – monthly or annual – will be automatically upgraded to a Founding Member with all of the Founding tier’s benefits. Typically, the Founding Membership costs $120 USD per year. However, for all of you who are being upgraded, you will get the benefits of a Founding Member while maintaining your current subscription rates for the life of your subscription. That means if you are a $5 per month subscriber, you are a Founder at $5 per month for as long as you keep that subscription going. If you hopped on an annual subscription for $50 per year, that is your rate for as long as you keep it active. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.
Q: “But what does a Founding Membership add to my existing subscription?”
Why, I’m so glad you asked! In addition to the subscriber-only articles, videos, and podcasts that you currently have access to, Founders will have early access to podcast episodes, a private chat for Founding Members, and early-access to a new publication that I will announce at the end of this post. I have other ideas in mind, but I don’t want to talk about them yet until I’m able to sort out the logistics of that go along with them.
Q: “What if I have a unique situation, or was a past supporter with an expired subscription?”
Both good questions! I know some of you do have special circumstances regarding your current subscriptions, but you are included in this as well. I will be emailing all Founders in the coming days in order to get the new mailing list established. If you don’t see it within the next 24-48 hours, please check your spam folder and whitelist the email. That, and the chat, will be the primary way I will communicate with the Founders moving forward.
Now, if you’ve had a paid subscription in the past but dropped off or lapsed, I still want to show my appreciation for your past support. While the Founder promotion is only for those who are current paid supporters, I’d still be happy to give all past paid subscribers 2 free months of paid-level access. Just reach out to me and we can sort it all out.
Q: “You keep saying to contact you… but how do I contact you?”
There are a two primary ways. You can reach out to me through the Substack chat, or through email using the “Message Dan Scott” button below. I have set up a new account just for communicating with my readers/listeners.
Education Discounts Now Available
In the past I have received requests from college students who have wanted to sign up for a paid subscription but just couldn’t swing the normal rates. I can relate and wanted to help so in the past I’ve offered special discounts to those people individually but I recently discovered that Substack has a specific sale setting for people in education (students, faculty, and staff). With that in mind, there is now a standing education discount!
Education Subscriber Rates
$3.50 monthly (30% off the standard cost)
$35.00 yearly (30% off the standard cost) SAVE $7.00 over the monthly plan which equates to 2 free months
Simply sign up for your subscription using a school email address using this special link and the discount should automatically apply. If you have any trouble, shoot me an email or a message in the chat and we can sort that out. The education rates are their own discount and will not combine with any other discount now or in the future (i.e. no 50% off on top of the already 30% off).
1K Celebration Sale
For all of you free subscribers, I didn’t want to leave you hanging. In celebration of the 1,000 subscriber milestone, I thought it was high-time for a new sale! This sale consists of two-parts. The first is a weekend-long flash sale where you can pick up an annual or monthly subscription for a massive 80% discount! After that, it drops to 50% off for the rest of the week. This sale cannot be combined with the education discount, and will not give you access to the Founding Membership.

If you’ve been considering becoming a paid subscriber, I’d recommend you do so now because I will not be offering another sale like this for a very, VERY long time (if ever).
RM Quarterly is Here!
Last, but certainly not least, I want to take a moment here to reveal a new project that I’ve been working on. I know a lot of us have fond memories of the magazine eras of the past. While magazines were great, I am also a fan of periodical-type anthologies and digest readers. So as I noticed we were approaching the 1,000 subscriber milestone I wanted to do something like that.
RM Quarterly takes all of the articles that were written in a particular quarter (both free and paid) and compiles them in a way that makes sense for an e-reader or tablet. Volume 1 is out now and will be made available first to Founders, then to paid subscribers, and finally will be linked in the RM Quarterly tab on the menu bar. That will take you to the issue which can be picked up by everyone else over at itch.io for $1.50 per issue.
That’s all I have for now, so thank you all again for all of the support you have shown me over the last two and a half years. It really means a lot and I look forward to what the future holds!
