I just wanted to give you all a head up: Substack is currently running a special promotion called Substack-funded gifts. It’s a deal they’re running to try and get more people to use the mobile app, so if you’re an iPhone or Android user who doesn’t mind using apps (I know plenty of you try to avoid using your phones too much) you might want to check your email before November 4.
According to Substack, some of you “qualifying” free subscribers will receive an email apparently titled “Here’s $5” or something like that coming from a Substack promotional email address. By clicking the Claim your gift button you’ll be redirected to the appropriate App Store to install the app and sign in. This will grant you a free one month subscription to The Retro Millennial — a $5.00 value!
In their own words:
Clicking the “Claim gift” button in the campaign email opens a new browser window, directing users to the app store so they can install the Substack app and claim their gift subscription. Once they install the Substack app, they will be prompted to verify their phone number to unlock the gift. If users are not logged in to Substack when they click “Claim gift”, they will be prompted to enter their email address before being directed to the app store.1
This is an offer from Substack — not me — so picking up a free month still blesses me with the full price which will go toward picking up stuff for videos, articles, and an upgraded audio setup!
If you’ve been interested in supporting my work but haven’t wanted to invest in a paid subscription, this is a win-win situation for everyone involved. You get a free month of paid member access just in time for Netbook November. Substack gets another mobile app user. I get an extra $5 at no charge to you, and I must say, I like that.
When the month is concluding, Substack will send you a follow up reminder that the subscription will end soon at which point you can choose to renew the membership, or simply let it expire.
Of course, there’s no pressure. I just figured it’d be worth letting everyone know that the offer was legit and not a scam.
