Over the last year we have talked a fair bit about having a digital exit strategy and what we can do to ease the departure from our current computing habits should the need ever arise.
For starters I didn’t do it alone myself. I have a friend who is a Unix master. Helped me pick and choose based on my preferences for a source build.
have both a semi-stable wine and Dbot built in, rather than running on top. Mach in user space. (Nope,’it doesn’t work well..: but works).
Replaced the default file system with ext3 for direct access from macOS.
A post script compositor.
And a custom version of Alien and unstable but reliable Linux compatibility.
The goal was to turn a 2017 Intel iMac into an emulation machine for running archaic foreign software. Via translation where possible. But still work as a Mac and allow direct access to the Mac partition from BSD.
It will probably remain my toy work in progress for the remainder of my life.
I’ve always loved Unix and never really left it. Being a huge NeXT fan and in love with the CDE. And I love Castle In The Winds.
I should point out a minor flaw in my idea though. Building certain components into the core of the system gives you more stability in finicky software and allows the full platform to run as root. It also makes upgrading a terrorising thought.
Something to keep in mind with any os you build from scratch with major changes.
I run a heavily modified and customised FreeBSD along with my Apple devices and older “retro” systems.
Interesting. What kind of modifications did you make?
